There in the White Country

Someone starts to tell the wish of a dream. Not the dream: the wish of a dream; a thing quite different. Just then I realize: It’s been a while without dreaming about her. I don’t even remember when the last time was; just know it was the same as the others. It’s always the same.
Everything opens in some hands that are not my hands; they are more those hands mine that does not touch: they remember. I draw the veil then, groping, brushing with fingertips a whole made of cotton; the common clear nebula of those universes spreads and I realize; then is when I know I’m there (I know because I’m just a few years old, and I do not know I’m dreaming yet).
Sometimes the house changes; I mean, sometimes the living room is another than it was, and the rooms keep other furniture, other people, other memories than they kept.
What is almost always there, is the little piece of greenish tiles before the door; the light filtered, first, by the kitchen large window (that is beyond the tiles) and then through the frosted glass.
Almost always is that vision, where she appears cut in marbles of colorful lights on the frosted glass. I just see her on that way of light spheres. But I know it is her, and she pretends she does not know ( I mean, that I am dreaming about her, that I am not just a few years old and that she is not on the other side of the sugared glass, in a house that feign being her house).
Sometimes we speak for a long time; well I dream I think we have spoken for a long time. And then, that brief and stubborn moment of common sense appears, and jealousy claims: ¡This is impossible!
Then is when, like that, suddenly, chattering among memories of tricycles, runnings, curlies, balls, frizzed sweet potatoes, rice pudding, I see her and I am not a few years old anymore.
She appears in front of me and we both know that is about ending, that there’s no chance to come back to the beginning, to the behind-the-glass, that it is just a second of clouds and magic. She looks at me, and then the hands draw the furrows of her wrinkles with an impossible memory. She looks at me; I recognize that watery gauze curtain on the eyes and I remember I never knew the color of her iris. But I knew the curtain. And the exact texture of her lettuce cheek.
Like that, with an innocent urgency, knowing that everything (the living room, the rooms, the tiles, the large window) is coming off, is crumbling; knowing that the cotton is shredding; like that, quickly, I interrupt her, whatever she is saying.
And just when her hair is becoming to be part of a dog or a flower of the next dream; I scream, I whisper to her, fixing myself on the dense whiteness of her eyes:
- Hurry up, there’s no time: I love you.
There, in the world without time, sometimes my grandmother comes to say to me that she knows I love her.

Madres
